Low Cost Airlines. What about it?
Aug 27th
Better known as budget airlines or budget carriers, they are in hot news now…
I’m very sure you’ve known a lil’ bit about budget airlines. Our very own household
brand AirAsia is no longer a stranger to the world. They have recently been awarded
the Best Low Cost Airline Asia title by Skytrax. The awards list.

Budget airlines today have Southwest Airlines in the United States to thank for starting
the revolution. Then came Virgin Atlantic in US, Ryanair and easyJet in the Europe
years later and from then on, the revolution of budget airlines is extraordinary. A few
new budget airline has been emerging around Asia, sweeping the travel industry with surprises from time to time with their achievements.JetStar which will be flying Kuala Lumpur – Sydney route from 9th September is one
of Asia’s budget airlines making waves in the industry. Budget airlines, which follows
the the guideline of 3 hours+ flight is now abandoning it. Most budget airlines are going
towards the long haul flights plan, on a budget. Example, the AirAsiaX’s plan to fly
long haul from Kuala Lumpur to London, Sydney and Melbourne in time soon to come.

Another budget airline by the name of Viva Macau is making wave too. They are
flying to Sydney already. Why is every airline flying to Sydney? Maybe, our very own
Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) must learn how to attract these airlines in.
Hong Kong Express, as the name says it all, is a Hong Kong base budget airline.
This is also another Asian budget airline which is plying routes around China and its
nearby neighbours like Thailand.
With budget airlines sprouting worldwide like nobody’s business (see list here),
sometimes people would ask, is it better to travel in budget airlines or a full fledge airlines?
Now, let me just run through a few notable topics people would debate on this issue.
Cheap means good?
Every budget airlines claims to be the best or better than others. Typical Asian
mind would say “Cheap means no good!”. But then again, budget airlines has enabled
people around the world to travel without forking as much as they would for full
fledge airlines.
Budget airlines can offer a very cheap fare because of streamlined of overheads.
See how they go direct to consumers rather than going through 3rd Party?
They don’t offer meals and entertainment on board, they sell them to you!
They don’t give you air tickets, and make you print your own ticket online.
So that’s pretty much how they cut down cost and give you best fare per trip.
You would also ask how can AirAsia offer as cheap as 0.99 cents per trip? or
How can they offer a FREE SEAT to somewhere? How can they earn?
Simple. This is what we call, revenue management or some calls it pricing optimization.
For every 300+ seats in a Boeing 737-300 AirAsia uses, say about 50 seats is given
out for free, first come first serve basis. Once it is grab up, second tier of pricing kicks
in, say for RM 1.99 and another 20 seats for grabs. It goes higher per tier and they
do not lose anything. Higher tier fares can cover their overheads and earn profits.
Safe and Security
Security could be considered the top questions asked today. Again, Asian perception
comes in, “Cheap means no or very low maintenance”. Base on records, I can assure
you that budget airlines is serious about their safety and security.
Budget airlines is a new thing in travel industry. Being new, these budget airlines uses
mostly new airplanes. For the start, of course they lease the planes but then, look at
AirAsia, they are flying on Airbus now and going for all-Airbus fleet.
For the record, budget airlines from the start has not been on a bad disaster or crash.
It has always been a flawless record of safety for budget airlines.
When there are pros there are cons. Right? So here are the few cons for budget airlines.
- they fly to remote airport. Just like LCCT, look how much further in than KLIA.
- bad timings. Delay is a frequent word in their dictionary. Odd departure times.
- more restrictions. Your luggage overweight? PAY!
- free for all. Seats are not assigned. But airlines like Viva Macau assigns seats – FREE!
- no entertainment. Your approx 4 hours flight to Bali will bore you to deaths!
- you don’t get meals. Not like full fledge airlines, you have to pay for meals.
- less customer service. You talk to machine most of the time.
Just like many people say, “You pay peanuts, you get monkeys” but in better term
“You get services as for what you paid for”
Budget airlines has revolutionized traveling patterns and behaviour in world. Join in!

AirAsia Call Centre
Jul 28th
Have any of you had any fuss with calling AirAsia?
Like you are talking to machine more than talking to Human.
What’s worst, people at the other end of the phone just can’t really help much
and it’s like better not call than call right?
I had my own version of AirAsia Call Centre memories. Which was two days ago.
I did a booking and need to change a name for my passenger. This Chinese girl
picked up the call and attended to my matter = Name Change. As I could recall her
name goes along the lines of “Sa Wa”, “San Wah”, “San Mah” or something that
sound like those.
Being a travel agent, we do not want to involve passenger with payment but
just to deal with the company directly instead. I can’t do anything because the
online portal we travel agents use just can’t reach to the page where we can edit
the bookings. See prove: (don’t want to get sued for lying)

I’ve dealt with numerous call centre and they would wait for you to put down the
phone first then only they put down. But this time I called, this girl put down the phone
first than me! Well, yes, I know, we “practically” ended our conversation, but then!
but never got the chance, because she freakin’ put down the phone so FAST.
Lightning fast! (i’m guessing she needs to pee?)
Yeah, she said she can’t help. But at least help with reporting the error would be great
help, Right? OH you might heard AG Payment, it means Agent Payment
If any AirAsia official is reading this, (I doubt they will) please look into this
matter at your website and give it a repair. And this girl, she really needs training..
Jetstar flying Kuala Lumpur to Sydney
Jul 24th

For those in the nutshell, Jetstar is considered Australian low cost carrier similar as Air
Asia to Malaysia. Jetstar is wholly owned by Qantas Airlines and half (51%) of the stake
in the company is being held by Singaporeans.
Today 24th July 2007, Jetstar made a statement on the availability of special
promotional web fare starting 12:00 hours 24th July till 22:00 hours 25th July 2007.
The promotional fare is starting as low as RM 88! Seriously read me RM88!

I was never shocked but I knew it would come. Come on, if AirAsia can throw free seatings, what is Jetstar pricing them at RM 88? I straight away went to their website
and check it out. Previously before this statement was out, I did made my check, but the price of RM 88 never appear everytime I do my search. But this time, the lowest I could get is RM 488 per way.
I’ve done a search for October, and this is what I’ve got. From 16th till 30th October.

Its only like RM 1796.27 for return ticket PLUS tax! WOW.. I’m like WOW… O_O
Pretty impressive huh. Look let’s compare.
An airfare for flight on Malaysian Airlines would cost RM 2160
An airfare for flight on Qantas Airlines would cost RM 1875
And these are just airfares only.. Not inclusive tax. Tax is about RM 800 +/-
So flying with Jetstar means, we are saving about RM 1,000! Kewl!
What else!?? I CAN RESERVE SEATS!
But they have a clause that, they might not guarantee you the seats you book.
Who cares? I can reserve my seats at no extra cost. Not like AirAsia.. gah.

Jetstar will be flying with Airbus 330-200s. A 303 seater flight. I like Airbus

I was thinking, “Oh No Man.. about like 8 hours of flight with no food and entertainment!
But then.. look what I found?I can fly just like any other airlines, with food, entertainments, drinks but no alcohol ![]()
Nevermind the alcohol, but FOOD, ENTERTAINMENT on demand summore, and DRINKS, these are all I need for a long haul flight. I don’t want to be zombie man..
All these in doesn’t even cost me a bomb.. LOOK.

RM 290 for all the fun I need and I still save! For the meals, you will be served
twice per sector of the international flight plus coffee and tea.
What more is that, you can take back the blanket, pillow and amenity kit.
For the entertainment, you will have on-demand video. Start, pause, rewind and
fast forward all you like and also, laugh at your neighbour who don’t have that in
his package!
Quick grab your seats while stocks seats last. Go and make your booking now
