Quit Smoking! Will You?

July 13, 2008 – 1:13 pm

Day 2… The Tour Guide:
He is an experienced tour guide clocking more than 20 years in the industry.

I thought he will be good, but he is not doing enough to interact with the children.
Which.. makes the whole tour.. not really fun and happening.

So back to the main topic. I got myself a copy of TheStar today and I found this section on quiting smoking very interesting. I went on to probe more online and this is their article in their Lifestyle section, Rules to Freedom.

This article is written by Julian Leicester on the will to quit smoking. You can read more of this work here at Hypno Station. Now, why I find it very interesting? It is because. I do smoke (ah hah! Bet most of you don’t know!) and I personally find that quitting smoking is not a hard task afterall. Personal experience.

Few days ago, I had dinner with Pam and she was surprised to know that I smoke. She would not even know if I didn’t say it out. Let me just put down on my own personal views the type of smokers out there…

Social Smoker: A person who smoke while socializing, with clients or friends.
Addict Smoker: They claims that they can’t kick the habit of smoking.
Heavy Smoker: A person that talk 20 sentence and smokes 2 cigarettes in between.

Now, I personally would put myself in the category of social smoker. I normally smoke when I’m out clubbing or drinking and sometimes when you hang out with friends who smokes and I would just take a stick just to… you know.. socialize?.. haha

I’ve seen, both “acclaimed” addict and heavy smoker, and I think that it is just ridiculous that sometimes, they say that they can’t kick the habit or it is not easy to quit. No! It is not that case. The case of “not easy to quit” that is.

It is all about the matter of the mind. It is you yourself to put the final word of “Yes” or “No” to smoking. Just like Julian how Julian put it in his own words.

“Smoking is a product of the mind. Get clarity about this fact now.”

Don’t you just agree to that statement?
That is why you don’t see me walking around with cigarette packs, wanting to smoke from now and then. I decide for myself, when I want to smoke and when I do not. When I call it enough for just one stick and that’s it.

But that thinking doesn’t help much with the quit smoking right? It will certainly help, because I walked the road before, I know how rough it was or rather EASY to quit smoking.

Imagine a complete half a year of not smoking.. then I start back and then stop again.
Hah! Bet most of the smokers are finding diffculty in doing that. Even going from 10 sticks a day to 1 stick a day is already like telling a baby not to cry when they are already crying.

Quitting smoking is a goal. It should be part of the (insert number) number of things you want to do before (insert target). A goal can be as easy as how I do it. I bought a cigarette pack today, and took only 5 sticks and I threw the pack away at the end of the day because I said to myself, “The hell with it”. That’s the price I have to pay. RM 8 and only 5 sticks and its down in the drain… Try doing this with less sticks? haha

A goal could also be, keeping yourself in good health and also your loved ones will come near you when you smell good. (some people just don’t like smoke smells) Depends on individual basically.

Ultimately, smoking is just a mind over matter kinda thing. When you can get control of your mind to set an objective or goal on the whole reason of quitting smoking, I bet you can achieve that. EASILLY!

Go check out Hypno Station and also you can find the series on Create Your Will to Quit.

  4. well i thought the same way too - It is all about the matter of the mind. It is you yourself to put the final word of “Yes” or “No” to smoking.

  6. i agree with joshuaong, its hard to quit coz the addictive chemicals are hard to remove from the body. ANd I will never know what an addict feels.

so…er…with that in mind, why would I even try a cigarette?

  7. You don’t need to smoke to socialize.

And the best thing is not to start it :D

  8. It’s a choice just like anythign in life.. same goes for if you want to lose weight.. if you want to do your best.. It’s all up to you how much determination you have in order to succeed to a goal :) Hopefully there are smokers out there who are willing to read this and take the turn :)

  9. jun: thanks bro! and trying itself will not get you hooked. its you wanting to smoke that is…

azlan: Addict Smoker? Wah.. smoke less for now..then lesser.. and then even lesser and then feel disgusted smoking more than 1 stick per day!

joshuaongys: they cheh you, you give them the link to this post.. :P haha

r.p: the choice is ultimately on the person’s hand. but i think putting the term “socialize” is a lot high class. I shall put it as hanging out.. “socializing”? naw.. i seldom smoke when i meet new people.. just that ethics.. for me..

aronil: True enough.. I stop my gym because i think it doesn’t work much for me.. but then.. its just that I’m lazy hahaha
wait.. i mean.. i have many work lah.. :P

  10. Interesting…

Hypnosis works only on the basis that the participant is willing…
You cannot hypnotize a person to do something against their own will…
Eg, hypnotize them and demand their ATM pin number won’t work.

It’s close to NLP actually :D

  11. Hello Thomas,

I truly love your sharing blog on my Create the Will to Quit Smoking column series written recently in the The Star newspaper.

Quitting the habit is just moving into another constant thought. A constant thought for health.

I have a global mission to teach people how to quit smoking by creating the “Cigarette Slayer” will to quit smoking. I am planning seminars and media products to be available soon to quit smoking. I thank you for the support.

Once again Thank you Thomas! Great Writing.
